Choosing Your Prom Dress

If you want to find the perfect prom dress, you need to do start your research well before prom night.

Begin by browsing the internet for tips and advice on what to wear. You can also find some great online prom dress stores, so check out what styles of dresses are being sold this season.

After checking online, have a look at some of the latest fashion magazines, and then you can see if there are any particular cuts or colours that are on trend. When you are doing your research, make sure that you apply it to yourself, and remember to stick to your own fashion style.

Whilst you read up on all this information, have a think about colours that might suit you. Do a colour test if you have never done one. To do this, simply take loads of different coloured clothes out of your wardrobe and hold them up next to your face. You will see that some of these colours will wash you out, and some will make you look really healthy. For example, white will look awful on those with red hair, however it will look stunning on those with very dark brown hair.

Remember that fit and cut is important. You’ll want to feel comfortable, so you can dance and sit down without feeling self-conscious; and you also need to pick a cut that will flatter your best features. So, for example, if your best feature is you legs then show them off in a knee length prom gown.

It’s worth thinking about the kind of fabric you choose. Some people look better in softer fabrics like chiffon, whilst others look striking in harsher ones like satin. Try and work this out before you go out to try any dresses on, or decide early on in your shopping trip.

Choose your shopping day and shopping buddy carefully. Both of these have a huge potential to be disappointing if not organised well. Pick a day, put it in the diary, and keep the day completely free. Start the day early, just in case you have to spend a while in several shops; and do not be afraid to go sale shopping, as you can often get top quality at a cheaper price. Go with someone who really knows you, and will let you know if something is perfect, or imperfect. And make sure you go with someone who has a lot of energy, as you don’t want to have to force them round in the afternoon.

When you go into a shop have a good look around before picking items up. It may also be a good idea to ask the sales assistant if there is a larger changing room available, as you will probably be spending a lot of time in it, and it helps to have a larger room. Do not be worried if the first dress you try on is the right one, but do try on the others you pick up, just in case something better is soon to come.

It is a good idea to take pictures of the gowns you try on, and then look at them a few days later. This way you can see the dresses from a different angle, which should help clarify your decision. You can then go back later and buy the dress you really like. If you can’t find the dress you want, ask the assistants who can usually order in more stock at no extra charge.

Make sure that you wear appropriate clothing when you go on your shopping trip. Wear nice underwear that will not show through any fabrics, and pick a strapless bra that will go with most dress necklines. Take some high-heeled shoes with you, so you can picture the final product, and always remove your socks.

The final and most important tip is to tell you to start shopping as soon as you can. Since you won’t want to settle for second best, and finding the perfect dress will take time.
