Prom is an exciting event, but it can become
expensive quickly. These tips will help you
get everything you need while staying within
your budget.
Prom night is right around the corner, and
you still have a lot of shopping to do. You
still need to buy a dress, shoes, an evening
bag, hosiery, hair accessories, and make up.
All these things are adding up to a lot of money,
but you want the night to be perfect.
Rather than spending more money than you should
and possibly regretting it later, try some of
these money saving tips.
You may be able to borrow a gown or host a
dress swap with your friends. Alternatively,
if you know someone that is a seamstress, you
may be able to have a dress custom made for
less than it would cost to purchase one.
There are also shops that rent formal wear
if you prefer not to spend a lot of money on
a dress that you will probably only wear one
time. Bridal shops rent out formal dresses and
even make alterations. You can also pick up
satin shoes and have them dyed at most bridal
shops.
Do not turn your nose up at thrift stores and
consignment shops. These are some of the best
places to purchase inexpensive formal gowns.
Many consignment shops are fairly upscale and
only offer designer clothing that has been "gently
used." Prom gowns usually fall into that
category, since they are frequently worn only
once. Always try on dresses before purchasing.
Have the dress professionally cleaned and no
one need be the wiser.
You may also be able to find a great evening
bag or wrap to go with your dress for far less
than you would pay at a retail shop or boutique.
While most people prefer not to purchase shoes
from second hand stores, it is wise to at least
take a look. Some shops purchase clearance items
from retail stores and offer new items at highly
discounted rates.
Do not forget clearance racks at major department
stores. There is nothing wrong with purchasing
a dress on clearance. It is just as beautiful
as it was when it was selling for twice the
price. Just make sure there are no defects,
which led to the discount. Examine zippers,
closures, hemlines, trim or beading, and the
lining carefully. It is best to look at clearance
items well in advance of prom. During prom season,
good deals may be scarcer.
It is also a good idea to start shopping for
shoes and a bag sooner than later. Retailers
know what time of year people start shopping
for prom, so discounted items will be harder
to find in some cases. This is also generally
true of make up and perfume counters. Free samples
or trial sizes may not be as readily available
during a peak shopping season.
Another good idea is to purchase certain items
at regular stores instead of pricey establishments.
Hosiery, certain make up items, even decorative
barrettes, hair clips, and costume jewelry all
come in several attractive varieties and can
be purchased for much less than you would pay
at a boutique.
You can look beautiful and have an enchanting
prom night without going over budget.
